Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good SAT score?

One that sits inside the middle 50% range of the colleges you're applying to, which each college publishes. For scale, College Board puts a 1200 at the 75th percentile of SAT takers.

What is the SAT score range?

400 to 1600 in total. Each section, Reading and Writing and Math, is scored from 200 to 800.

How is the SAT scored?

Your section scores come from the questions you get right, with no penalty for wrong answers. Because the second module adapts to how you did on the first, College Board's scoring also accounts for how hard the questions were.

What are SAT percentiles?

The share of students who scored at or below you. College Board reports two: the SAT User percentile, against students who took the SAT in the past three years, and a nationally representative one, against all US 11th and 12th graders. A 1200 is the 75th SAT User percentile.

How do you send SAT scores to colleges?

Through your College Board account. Each weekend registration includes four free score sends, which you can choose or change until nine days after the test. After that, each report costs a fee. You pick which test dates to send, not individual sections from different days.

When do SAT scores come out?

About two weeks after test day. The table above has the release date for every 2026-27 sitting.
